Prepare the Blackberry Base

- In a large mixing bowl, combine blackberries, 3/4 cup of sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Gently toss to coat the blackberries evenly.

Make the Cornmeal Biscuit Topping
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter with a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the milk and lemon zest until just combined. Do not overmix.
Assemble and Bake
- Spoon the cornmeal biscuit topping over the blackberry mixture in the baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar over the biscuit topping.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
Serve
- Remove from the oven and let cool for about 10 minutes.
- Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
